Poems and Poets Trivia Test

Today is the first Wednesday in October, and that means it is Random Acts of Poetry Day! Since I’ve always enjoyed poetry (both writing and reading it), that’s one of October’s obscure and quirky holidays I can really get behind! And to honor the occasion, I’m sharing a brand new addition to my trivia quiz collection built around the subject of poetry. It’s a free printable Poems and Poets Trivia Test!
My husband take my test last night. He admittedly does not read — or write — nearly as many poems as I do, but still managed to match 11 out of 15 poets to famous lines from their work. He thinks my test includes just the right amount of easy-to-challenging questions. There are a few selections nearly everyone will recognize, but others that only the most avid poetry fans will know.

The real test came this morning when I gave the quiz to some of my past and current homeschool students. The verdict — the ones who graduated several years ago did not do as well as Doug on the test, but my youngest, who still hears me read daily poetry selections throughout the school year, only missed two.

That means she correctly matched 13 poets to the first lines of their poems, such as the following:
- If you can keep your head when all about you/ Are losing theirs and blaming it on you….
- O Captain! My Captain!/ Our fearful trip is done….
- How do you like to go up in a swing/ Up in the air so blue?
- But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks?/ It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.
- Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)/ That saved a wretch like me!
- The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play./So we sat in the house all that cold, cold, wet day.
- Once upon a midnight dreary,/ while I pondered, weak and weary….
Ready to try your hand at the quiz? Print as many copies of the following quiz as you need to challenge your friends and family members. But only print page 1, because the second page is the answer key, and you won’t need more than one copy of that.
