Lost Trail (A Graphic Novel Review)

I recently bought a copy of Lost Trail: Nine Days Alone in the Wilderness thinking it would make a great gift for my grandson. He and his dad have been reading graphic novels together, and the fact this one is based on the true story of a 12-year-old Boy Scout who got separated from his family and friends during a sudden thunderstorm while climbing a mile-high mountain in Maine makes it especially intriguing.

Stephen King calls this story of survival both terrifying and uplifting: “It’s wonderful to see it in a format that will introduce it to a whole new generation of readers,” King’s quote continues on the book’s back cover. “Here is a graphic novel about a real American superhero.”

So, when Timberdoodle later offered to send me a free copy of Lost Trail to review, I naturally said yes! And, since our family was heading into the wilderness ourselves last week, this seemed like a perfect book to take on our Alaskan cruise with us. Quite the page-turner!

I read Lost Trail and thoroughly enjoyed the pacing and the daily news articles interspersed with Donn’s firsthand account of what exactly happened.

My 16-year-old daughter read Lost Trail and loved the story, too. All the illustrations make the action really come to life, so that you feel like you are right there with him, each step of the way.

Even my 89-year-old mother devoured the tale, frame by frame. She loved the fact the author was so vocal about his faith and quick to acknowledge divine intervention in his ultimate rescue.
