For the past couple of months, our family has been trying out a new keyboarding program I got from Timberdoodle. It’s called Typing Instructor Gold.
It’s touted as being “the most advanced typing program available.” I can’t really vouch for that claim, since I haven’t tried them all. But after 30+ years of homeschooling, we have tried at least a dozen different typing programs, and I like this one as well as any of the others and better than most. Here’s why:
So many of the programs we used with our older kids are now subscription based, which means a recurrent monthly payment, whether your kids are currently using the program or not. This is NOT the case with Typing Instructor Gold. You purchase the program once, and it is yours to use as long as you want.
What’s more, you can use the same program with multiple students. This adds to the fun. I gave my 11-year-old a head start, but am planning to have her brothers go through the course, as well, to brush up on their keyboarding skills. The program automatically tracks each child’s progress and tailors itself to his/her skill level.
I love the fact the lessons can be completed quickly and easily. And it doesn’t take a lot of time to see results.
My daughter gladly practices her typing without reminders from me. It doesn’t even feel like she’s doing “school” to complete the lessons. And the “travel” theme and destinations dovetail nicely with her geography studies, reinforcing what she’s learning in other subjects.
The skills tests in Typing Instructor Gold make it easy to choose your student’s starting level and track her progress as she completes the units. Keyboarding is such a vital skillset to have in our digital age. I’m happy to have found a good program to build that ability in my children.
You can buy Typing Instructor Gold as a stand-alone elective, but it is also part of Timberdoodle’s 2022 Sixth Grade Curriculum Kit. If you’re looking for a great way to teach your kids to type, I hope you’ll check it out!
While you’re on the Timberdoodle website, I’d encourage you to take a look around. We love everything we’ve ever ordered from this small family-owned company!
