Swashbuckling Pirates Curriculum

Ahoy, Maties! If ever you or your kids have wanted to learn more about the age of pirates, the Nomadic Professor’s new Swashbuckling Pirates Curriculum has you covered!

I had the opportunity to review this course for Timberdoodle last year, and was genuinely surprised by how thorough it was. Who knew there was so much to learn about pirates?

Of course, we’ve gone through other courses with the Nomadic Professor in the past, including both US History and World History. I assumed the Swashbuckling Pirates Curriculum would be much shorter than those earlier courses — maybe something we could knock out in a week or two over the summer — but I was wrong.

In addition to all the audio lectures and text files and timelines and maps….

… and all the distinctive video lectures the Nomadic Professor films on location (one of my favorite features)…

the Swashbuckling Pirates Curriculum also includes an extensive reading list — much longer than the few entries you can see in the screen shot below — for students who wish to delve even more deeply into the subject matter.

He includes a similarly lengthy list of movies and TV shows to help augment your studies and help the subject matter spring to life.

I particularly enjoyed reading the Nomadic Professor’s thorough analysis of how literature and the silver screen helped shape society’s impressions and common stereotypes of pirates.

Of course, my favorite aspect of all the Nomadic Professor’s courses are the videos. It’s almost like being there yourself, along with a private docent to explain the history and significance of the sites you are virtually visiting.

Multiple choice quizzes are dispersed through the curriculum at regular intervals, as well, to make it easy to track how much information your student is retaining.

The study wraps us with a final essay assignment, to help students assimilate all they’ve learned. But even this assignment is chosen in such a way as to make it fun — picking a favorite pirate from those covered in the course and providing reasons in support of your choice.

Does this Swashbuckling Pirates Curriculum sound like something that would interest your or your children? Then I’d urge you to check it out. You can purchase it through Timberdoodle as a stand-alone elective, but it is also included in the 9th Grade Curriculum Kit.

And while you’re on the Timberdoodle website, I’d encourage you to look around. We love everything we’ve ever ordered from this small family-owned company!
