Free Printable Student Driver Sign

A few weeks ago, a reader wrote to ask me about the “Student Driver” sign we used with our teens. I honestly don’t remember ever posting a picture of that sign, but it must be on the blog somewhere, because she knew all about it.

Sadly, after serving us faithfully for the two decades I spent teaching my first eleven kids (plus two grandkids) how to drive, that original sign bit the dust before #12 ever got her learner’s permit, which happened just last week.

So when we were practicing her newfound driving skills on the road today, and other cars kept zipping past us as she focused on staying in her lane, signaling turns, checking rearview mirrors, and obeying traffic laws, she self-consciously asked if I could get a sign for her, too.

Our old sign was actually a bumper sticker that came with an old driving curriculum kit we used for the first few kids (before everything converted to online subscriptions). Instead of putting the bumper sticker on the car, I stuck it to a sheet magnet, so I could remove it with ease and reuse it with the next child in line.

Of course, I had no idea where to find a ready-made replacement, but it was a simple matter to design this one myself:

Walgreen’s had everything in their photo department on sale this week for 50% off, so I uploaded the .png file pictured above, had them print it on a 5″x7″ magnet, picked it up an hour later, and for $2.99, we’re back in business!

Do you have a new driver at your house? You can use my design and your own local photo printer to make a sign just like ours. I hope that will help keep everyone safe and elicit a little more patience and sympathy from more seasoned drivers who are traveling the same roads.
