In Dallas today to grab birthday breakfast with my beautiful daughter before she had to go to work. She’s not on social media, so I’ll skip the public comments about how much I love her and how very proud we are of her. I’m loving all these chickpea and quinoa salads

I’m loving all these chickpea and quinoa salads my daughter prepped for us. Such an easy, make-in-advance meal to take to co-op or eat for lunch when we’re pressed for time. We filled each jar with: 1 T olive oil & 1 T balsamic vinegar plus approximately ¼ cup each of chickpeas, diced red onion, cucumber, red bell peppers, quinoa, and chopped raw kale. Top with a sprinkle of salt, pepper, and sesame seeds. Yum! #easymeal #saladrecipe #wholefood #homeschool #lifeskills #goodeats

We dropped Rachel off at the airport earlier this

We dropped Rachel off at the airport earlier this week. She was heading to Europe, having taken a year-long job working as an au pair. Her older sister went to work in the Middle East two weeks earlier, and one of our sons will be moving his family to South Korea in September. We are super excited for all of them, but simultaneously missing them something fierce! It’s a comfort to know the Lord has gone before every one of them, smoothing the way, and He will remain with them each step of the journey. “Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,

We’re getting so excited about starting back to

We’re getting so excited about starting back to school that we decided to decorate our seasonal tree with school-themed ornaments we made ourselves. 🍎 So far, we’ve crocheted apples, decoupaged wooden disks with vintage artwork of children reading, and printed Bible verses about wisdom and studying and learning on tiny little chalk boards. We have a few more ideas up our sleeve for additional ornaments (my 14-year-old daughter is an enthusiastic helper in all things crafty), so I may try to update the post once we’ve completed those. ✏️ In the meantime, I pray your school year will be filled with interesting new discoveries as you pursue wisdom, knowledge, and understanding (whether you’re still attending class or not). 📚 #lifelonglearner #pursuewisdom #listenup #getunderstanding #donotforgetmyteaching #thefearofthelordisthebeginningofwisdom

It was still dark when Doug left for work this morning, so I had to track down his truck at work to paint the windows (I decorate his car every year on our anniversary). Lots has changed in the 37 years since we first said “I do” (including jobs, cars, houses, and waistlines), but one thing that’s remained the same is the fact I adore my husband and count myself blessed to be his wife! ❤️ #happilyeverafter #forbetterorworse #anniversay #flandersfamilytradition #ilovemyhubby #37years

Abby has been propagating all sort of plants from seed and/or cuttings this year. 💐 Here she is, collecting zinnia seeds so as to plant more of these bright, cheerful blooms in other corners of our yard. I love it when my kids develop new interests and go deep in hobbies that are outside my areas of expertise. That’s one more benefit of homeschooling: the opportunity to learn alongside and FROM your own children (plus plenty of free time for them to pursue such interests). Other interests my children have pursued this summer: pleasure reading, event planning, learning PYTHON, volunteering/shadowing at the hospital, making jewelry, throwing pottery, painting in water color, vegetable gardening, woodworking — the list goes on and on. And the more they learn, the more excitedly they talk about what they’re learning, and the more I learn, as well. #homeschoolmom #homeschooling #momofmany #summerlearning #delightdirectedlearning #gardening

We hosted some fun Summer Olympic Games of our own over the weekend, which included: 🍉a watermelon eating contest (no hands!)
💦a water balloon toss
🍒cherry pit spitting
💪🏻an arm wrestling tournament
🏀knock out
📝 a couple of fun trivia tests
➕and more Winners got homemade gold, silver, and bronze medals crated from salsa jar lids. 🥇🥈🥉 My only regrets: 3️⃣ three of our kids weren’t able to make it
📸 we forgot to take many photos
🇺🇸I should’ve sung the national anthem when giving the winners their medals
