In honor of National Potato Day (today!) I’m sharing instructions for a super simple potato stamp craft for kids. I tried this one out last night with my youngest daughter and a few of my grandkids. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To prepare for the craft, just cut a couple of raw potatoes in half, then use a sharp knife to carve designs on the flat side of the potato. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stars, hearts, and flowers work well. I tied a smiley face as well, but paint tended to collect in the eyes and mouth, then the print just came out looking like a circle. In retrospect, I should’ve tried carving a Christmas tree instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you’ve finished cutting your stamps, squirt a little paint onto a pallet or small saucer. We used water-based acrylic but tempera paint would also work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dab the potato stamp onto the paint, then use it to stamp designs onto paper. We used repurposed packing paper. I routinely save the brown paper Amazon uses to pad the contents of their shipping boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I smooth it out and roll it up like a roll of gift wrap, which is exactly what I use it for — wrapping presents. These potato stamps would add a little more color to the gift wrap, which is why I’m thinking of doing this project again closer to December, but carving Christmas wreaths or trees or holly instead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
