In our family, this book is as much a staple of childhood as Dr. Seuss. My oldest son was given a copy as a shower gift (over 25 years ago), and I&#8217;ve been reading it faithfully to my little ones ever since. I just assumed it was a favorite at everybody&#8217;s else&#8217;s house, too.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that these (younger) moms weren&#8217;t familiar with this title made me wonder what other classics they&#8217;d missed along the way. Hence, this list of our most beloved bedtime stories. There are lots of others out there, to be sure, but <strong>these are the books my kids request again and again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, just one book before bed is never enough, so I&#8217;m including seven of our family favorites to read next time you tuck in. That&#8217;s enough to enjoy a different story every night of the week. Or just go ahead and read them all in a single sitting &#8212; then sleep and repeat. <strong>These stories never grow old (although the same cannot be said of the little ones listening in your lap &#8212; so savor such moments while you still can).<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The Best Books for Bedtime<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3rgHyEP\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Napping House<\/a> by Audrey Wood<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3rgHyEP\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/The-Napping-House.png?resize=250%2C298&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Napping House\" width=\"250\" height=\"298\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7055\" \/><\/a>Few things will put me to sleep any faster than the sound of rain upon my windows, and the occupants of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3rgHyEP\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Napping House<\/a> must feel the same way. <\/p>\n<p>They pile one by one onto a cozy bed. There they remain snoozing, snoring, dozing, and dreaming, until the storm blows over, the bed breaks, and nap time comes to a happy end. <\/p>\n<p>Audrey Wood&#8217;s cumulative verse is simple and witty, and her husband Don&#8217;s fabulously funny illustrations make this beloved bedtime book an especial pleasure to read. <\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3bdJQif\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Going to Sleep<\/a> on the Farm by Wendy Cheyette Lewison<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3bdJQif\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Going-to-Sleep-on-the-Farm.png?resize=250%2C311&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Best books for bedtime:Going to Sleep on the Farm\" width=\"250\" height=\"311\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7056\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Going-to-Sleep-on-the-Farm.png?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Going-to-Sleep-on-the-Farm.png?resize=241%2C300&amp;ssl=1 241w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3bdJQif\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Going to Sleep on the Farm<\/a> is another family favorite, as much for the beautiful artwork as for the sweet poem. <\/p>\n<p>In lilting, repetitive verse, a young boy asks his father about the sleeping habits of various farm animals, which are illustrated in warm colors and rich detail. <\/p>\n<p>The father answers each question lovingly and patiently as his son slowly picks up his toys before bed. <\/p>\n<p>By the end of the book, the nursery is tidy and the boy is tenderly tucked into bed himself. <\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2OkdpGa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Goodnight Moon<\/a> by Margaret Wise Brown<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2OkdpGa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Goodnight-Moon.png?resize=250%2C222&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Best books for bedtime:Goodnight Moon\" width=\"250\" height=\"222\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7057\" \/><\/a>None of my children have been able to resist the bright colors and ritualistic simplicity of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2OkdpGa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Goodnight Moon<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In this simple book, each and every item in the nursery is wished a fond goodnight before the lights finally dim and the young one drops off to sleep. <\/p>\n<p>Having gone through several paper-page copies of this book through the years, we highly recommend the board book version. <\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3sUfojr\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Home Sweet Home<\/a> by Jean Marzolla<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3sUfojr\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Home-Sweet-Home.png?resize=250%2C330&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Best books for bedtime:Home Sweet Home\" width=\"250\" height=\"330\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7058\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Home-Sweet-Home.png?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Home-Sweet-Home.png?resize=227%2C300&amp;ssl=1 227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>Sadly, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3sUfojr\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Home Sweet Home<\/a> is currently out of print, although you may still be able to check it out from your local library or track down a used copy. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth tracking down.<\/p>\n<p>The text is understated and unpretentious &#8212;
