Ulysses S. Grant was born on this day, April 27, in the year 1822. In honor of his birthday, I’m sharing another Presidential Coloring Page<\/a>, which features a Grant quote that gives great insight into what made our 18th president tick.<\/p>\n

Grant wrote, “Hold fast to the Bible. To the influence of this Book we are indebted for the progress made in true civilization and to this we must look as our guide in the future.”<\/p>\n

Yet another time, Grant urged his listeners, “Hold fast to the Bible as the sheet-anchor of your liberties; write its precepts in your hearts, and practice them in your lives.”<\/p>\n

With the Word of God as his sure foundation, is it any wonder Grant became our nation’s first 4-star general and its youngest president ever elected at the time? <\/p>\n

Yet, Grant still maintained an attitude of humility, insisting that “… anything is better than indecision. We must decide. If I am wrong, we shall soon find out and can do the other thing. But not to decide wastes both time and money and may ruin everything.” <\/p>\n

“The most confident critics,” he observed, “are generally those who know the least about the matter criticized.”<\/p>\n

As with so many of our other presidents, much of Grant’s advice still holds true today. If only our nation would heed it! If only we would turn again to the wisdom of Scripture and submit ourselves to God and plead for His mercy and grace! <\/p>\n

Grant believed “In every battle there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten, then he who continues the attack wins.” That may be true. Certainly throwing up our hands in frustration and giving up is not the path to victory. Nor will burying our head in the sand and pretending there’s not a problem help us win the culture war we are now engaged in.<\/p>\n

Yet God’s Word makes it clear that our real struggle “is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12<\/a>) That’s why the Bible that Grant spoke so highly of urges us to put on the full armor of God<\/a> and learn to skillfully wield the Sword of Truth, which is the Word of God.<\/p>\n
