Since January 30 is Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s birthday, this seems like the perfect time to share my FDR Coloring Page<\/a>. It features one of my favorite quotes from our 32nd president: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear.”<\/p>\n

My family is in New Orleans this weekend, and we spent all day touring the National World War II Museum<\/a>. There we saw the meaning of this quote on full display. Room after room, exhibit after exhibit, film after film, we witnessed example after example of that kind of courage.<\/p>\n

We were moved to tears multiple times as we listened to the oral histories and first-hand accounts. We heard from soldiers who fought for a cause that was more important than the fear the felt as they marched, flew, and sailed into battle.<\/p>\n

And we came away with the most profound gratitude for their brave and sacrificial service and for the freedoms we still enjoy as a result of their victory.<\/p>\n

We also read accounts of the sacrifices made at home in support of the war effort. From doctors and nurses who tended the wounded. From factory workers who labored tirelessly on the arsenal. From journalists who documented the war, reporting from the front lines where they rushed into battle with cameras instead of weapons in their hands. All were “of the same mind, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.”<\/p>\n

Both the history of the war and this vast collection of artifacts representing it really were incredible. If you ever get the chance to tour this musuem, please do. It is well worth the trip.<\/p>\n
