The Goodness and Mercy coloring page<\/a> I’m sharing this week features Psalm 23:6<\/a>. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”<\/p>\n\n\n

This is from the Shepherd’s Psalm — a psalm of David. Earlier in this psalm he speaks of walking “through the valley of the shadow of death.” David found himself in such a valley multiple times during the course of his life. In fact, the evil followed after him for years. Yet he did not fear the wicked, because he was confident in the Lord’s leading and was comforted by His faithful presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A matter of perspective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From a purely physical standpoint, David was hotly pursued by enemies who wanted to kill him and callously challenged by family members who wanted to usurp him. Yet from a spiritual perspective, he joyfully declared — without a hint of irony — that “goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” Constant companions, they never forsook him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does that seem like a contradiction? A disconnect?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It shouldn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any hardships we encounter that drive us more deeply into the arms of Jesus should be viewed as a blessing. Any trials that make us more keenly aware of our utter and complete dependence on God are at their core a mercy and a grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why James tells us to “count it all joy when you fall into various trials” (James 1:2-3<\/a>). It’s the reason Paul assures us, “God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it’s what allows believers to declare confidently with David, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” (Psalm 23:6<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n
