In honor of Mother’s Day, I’m sharing a poem I wrote for my own mom several years ago. If you’re not a fan of poetry, you can blame Tolkien for today’s post. <\/p>\n

My husband has been re-reading Lord of the Rings<\/a> to our family this spring. Our family loves J.R.R. Tolkien. He was such a brilliant writer, and there are many, many times during the course of his story that my husband gets choked up even reading it.<\/p>\n

Whenever that happens, I cry, too. Our older children swallow back lumps in their throats, as well, while the little ones prick up their ears and puzzle over what part of the tale could have moved the rest of us to tears.<\/p>\n

One thing I appreciate about Tolkien is his grasp of language and his obvious love for poetry. Both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are sprinkled liberally with rhymes, verses, and songs that Tolkien composed himself. My husband confesses to have skimmed past those parts when he devoured the books as a young boy, but he humors me by reading every word of them now with as lilting a cadence as he can muster.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m certainly no Tolkien, but I share his love for poetry and have myself dabbled for years in composing original verses and songs. Since today is Mother\u2019s Day, I thought now would be a fitting time to insert another of my own poems<\/a> into a blog post. (If you can’t stand rhymed verse, you have my permission to skip to the end.)<\/p>\n

Why God Made Mothers<\/h2>\n

For giving birth \u2014 as moms do best,
\nAnd nursing babies<\/a> at her breast,
\nFor singing lullabies at night
\nAnd soothing fears and hugging tight,
\nFor wiping teardrops from my eye
\nFor sympathizing when I cry
\nWhile kissing boo-boos on my knee,
\nFor bringing out the best in me,
\nFor teaching me to tie a lace,
\nAnd using spit to clean my face,
\nFor rocking me upon her lap
\nCajoling me to take my nap<\/a>,
\nFor baking cookies by the batch,
\nFor making sure our doors are latched
\nAt night before she goes to bed,
\nFor placing cold rags on my head
\nWhenever I am feeling sick
\nAnd fetching throw-up buckets, quick!
\nFor bringing me \u201cjust one more\u201d drink,,
\nFor understanding how I think,
\nAnd daily lifting me in prayer<\/a>,
\nFor combing tangles from my hair,
\nAnd teaching me to blow my nose,
\nFor scrubbing stains<\/a> out of my clothes,
\nFor reading stacks of picture books<\/a>,
\nAnd complimenting my good looks
\nAnd calling me endearing names,
\nFor driving me to football games,
\nFor watching o\u2019er me as I play,
\nCorrecting when I disobey,
\nFor letting me help wash the dishes
\n<\/a>After dinner \u2014 so delicious,
\nCoaxing me to eat green beans<\/a>,
\nAnd being patient in my teens<\/a>,
\nFor measuring how fast I grow<\/a>,
\nFor holding on, for letting go<\/a>,
\nAnd all the many things you do,
\nI\u2019m grateful, Mom, God gave me you.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s interesting how many of the books my husband loved most dearly as a child (and shares most enthusiastically as a parent, including Lord of the Rings<\/a>) center around an orphaned protagonist. Although Doug was blessed to have had a very attentive adoptive mom, he never knew his biological mother and keenly felt her absence during his formative years.<\/p>\n

When this holiday is hard<\/h2>\n

I know Mother\u2019s Day is difficult for a lot of people: People whose mothers are no longer with them. Those who never knew a mother at all. People who\u2019d like to be mothers themselves, but for whatever reason remain childless.<\/p>\n

But the fact is, if you are alive today, it is because you had a mother who carried you in her womb and chose for you the gift of life. And you can acknowledge and appreciate her for doing so.<\/p>\n

If you are so fortunate to have a mother still living and involved in your life, you can (and should) tell her how much you love her<\/a> and thank her for the countless ways she has blessed you through the years \u2013 every sacrifice she\u2019s made, every meal she\u2019s prepared, every prayer she\u2019s prayed, et cetera, et cetera.<\/p>\n

And if your mother has already passed, you can honor her memory by living the kind of life that should make any mother proud: one steeped in love, marked by gratitude, and girded with integrity.<\/p>\n
