Did you know that today is NationalSewing Machine Day<\/strong>? It is! And this simple sewing project for beginners makes the perfect way to celebrate!<\/p>\n

If you are fortunate enough to know how to use such a machine, then get it out and teach your child this important life skill.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

If you don’t know how to sew, but would like to learn, the simple little sundress my six-year-old daughter made this weekend is a perfect project for anybody just starting out.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

The fabric for this sleeveless beauty comes pre-smocked on one side<\/strong>. The particular style we bought came pre-ruffled on the other, as well, although the other end is usually just straight and smooth.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

I bought our fabric at 80% off <\/strong>a couple of months ago when Hancock’s was going out of business…<\/p>\n

…but you can also find some on Amazon<\/a> or at Hobby Lobby or JoAnn Fabrics<\/a>. Just look for “pre-smocked” or “mock smock” fabric, and don’t forget to use your coupon <\/strong>and\/or teacher’s discount.<\/p>\n

To make the dress, add an inch to your daughter’s chest measurement, then trim the fabric to that width.<\/strong> (For a skirt, use her waist measurement, instead).<\/p>\n

Then you simply sew a single seam up the back, add some simple straps, and you’re finished!<\/strong> If you don’t own a sewing machine, you can even do the stitching by hand.<\/p>\n

We bought a full yard of fabric, so we could use the leftover scraps to make straps for the dress and a matching outfit for her doll.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Didn’t Abby do a good job? She was thrilled with the results<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

…and she finished just in time<\/strong> to enter the dress in the creative arts contest<\/a> at East Texas State Fair.<\/p>\n
