Yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/web\/2017\/07\/11\/free-food-for-cow-costume-clad-customers-at-chick-fil-a-today\/\">we appreciated cows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we&#8217;ll take a moment to <strong>appreciate the deep, clear resonance of male voices in tight, four-part harmony<\/strong>. Because today is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.holidayinsights.com\/moreholidays\/July\/barbershopmusic.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barbershop Music Appreciation Day<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barbershopquartet.jpg?resize=1024%2C717&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"It&#039;s Barbershop Music Appreciation Day!\" width=\"1024\" height=\"717\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15725\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barbershopquartet.jpg?resize=1024%2C717&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barbershopquartet.jpg?resize=600%2C420&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barbershopquartet.jpg?resize=300%2C210&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barbershopquartet.jpg?resize=768%2C538&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barbershopquartet.jpg?resize=250%2C175&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/barbershopquartet.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As one who grew up listening to the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/5m--ptwd_iI?list=PLFK_XbsopkgY8__ptPzMzVJVe5tMfAkHp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gaither Vocal Band<\/a>, <strong>I really do like this kind of music.<\/strong> With or without red striped vests, straw hats, and handlebar mustaches.<\/p>\n<p>So I enjoyed hearing this little number by <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xmwAD7nHqaY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Martin and the Deep Canyon Rangers<\/a>. It&#8217;s entitled, &#8220;Atheists Don&#8217;t Have No Songs.&#8221; I know they&#8217;re singing it tongue-in-cheek, but <strong>the delivery is smooth and the lyrics are witty<\/strong>. So I wanted to share it here:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xmwAD7nHqaY\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This song makes a good point. <strong>People of faith do have a rich heritage of beautiful music<\/strong>. Most of the four-part harmonies from my past can be found in the hymnal I keep on my kitchen counter:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Hymnal-in-my-Kitchen.jpg?resize=1024%2C717&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Atheists don't have no songs... but Christians do!\" width=\"1024\" height=\"717\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15729\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hearing Martin&#8217;s &#8220;Atheists Don&#8217;t Have No Songs&#8221; quartet mention &#8220;Rock of Ages&#8221; sent me flipping back through those dog-eared pages to <strong>sing that beloved hymn once more. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Someone wise once observed, <em>&#8220;The man who doesn\u2019t read good books has no advantage over the man who can&#8217;t read them.&#8221;<\/em> I think the same could be said in regard to hymns. <strong>What&#8217;s the use of knowing all those wonderful lyrics by heart if we never sing them anymore?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I like some of the praise choruses that have become so popular in many churches today. But I miss singing those doctrinally rich hymns of my childhood. That&#8217;s why, if you ever stop by our house while I&#8217;m in the kitchen washing dishes, <strong>you&#8217;ll have to knock loudly to be heard over whichever one I&#8217;m belting out at the time.<\/strong> \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h2>A Few of My Favorite Hymns:<\/h2>\n<p>Below are a few acapella selections I recorded several years ago at the request of one of my aunts.
