Here are a few of <strong>our family&#8217;s favorite ideas<\/strong> to get you started:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><h2>Sing carols at a nearby nursing home<\/h2><br><p><strong>Some of these residents are alone in the world<\/strong> &#8212; no spouse, no children, no visitors, ever. It breaks my heart. When a group of us go to sing or play instruments for them, their eyes just light up.<\/p><br><figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"   class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13366\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Caroling-at-Assisted-Living-Home.jpg?w=900&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Thinking of Others at Christmastime - Caroling for residents at Assisted Living Home\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Caroling-at-Assisted-Living-Home.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Caroling-at-Assisted-Living-Home.jpg?resize=300%2C201&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Caroling-at-Assisted-Living-Home.jpg?resize=250%2C167&amp;ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><br><p>They are thrilled to have anybody pay attention to them, pat them on the back, <strong>ask how they are doing, and listen to their stories.<\/strong> They especially enjoy interacting with the younger children.<\/p><br><p>If music&#8217;s not your thing, don&#8217;t let that discourage you. Our older kids have volunteered at various retirement homes and assisted living centers over the years and have discovered that <strong>the residents also enjoy playing games, making seasonal crafts, and drinking rootbeer floats<\/strong>.<\/p><br><p>There may also be <strong>widows or shut-ins in your own church or neighborhood who would enjoy a visit during the holidays.<\/strong> You needn&#8217;t wait until they check into a retirement center before reaching out to them.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><h2>Participate in a toy drive for needy children<\/h2><br><p>One of our favorite annual traditions is hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/a-shoebox-stuffing-party\/\">shoebox stuffing party<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.samaritanspurse.org\/what-we-do\/operation-christmas-child\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Operation Christmas Child<\/a>. This program <strong>delivers Christmas gifts to children in need all over the world<\/strong>, and includes the gospel message along with toys, toiletries, and other goodies packed in the shoeboxes.<\/p><br><figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Screen-Shot-2013-11-06-at-2.43.34-PM-e1383797536346.png?resize=900%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Thinking of Others at Christmastime - Shoebox Stuffing Party for Operation Christmas Child: How To\"><\/figure><br><p>Of course, there are lots of <strong>other great programs dedicated to brightening the holidays for children in need<\/strong> or for those whose parents may not be in the picture, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toysfortots.org\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toys for Tots<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonfellowship.org\/about\/angel-tree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Angel Tree<\/a>.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><h2>Host students who are away from home<\/h2><br><p>Sometimes students are too far away to travel home for the holidays. This is especially true of international students whose home countries may not even celebrate the holidays of which we make such a big deal in America. <strong>Opening your home to such as these during the holiday season can be a blessing for both of you<\/strong> &#8212; giving them a place to stay and exposing you and your children to another culture.<\/p><br><figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"   class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13310\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Christmas-Stockings-2.png?w=900&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Large Family Christmas: What do you do about gifts?\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Christmas-Stockings-2.png?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Christmas-Stockings-2.png?resize=300%2C193&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Christmas-Stockings-2.png?resize=575%2C370&amp;ssl=1 575w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Christmas-Stockings-2.png?resize=250%2C160&amp;ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><br><p>We hosted a student for China for spring break, Thanksgiving, and Christmas for all four years he spent at a local private boarding school. He graduated last year and is now attending college out of state, but <strong>our holidays aren&#8217;t the same without him<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><h2>Serve at your local soup kitchen<\/h2><br><p>There are several area churches and service organizations in our town with programs already in place for helping feed those in need: homeless shelters, food pantries, inner-city outreaches. The need for workers is great, and <strong>it is usually pretty easy to get plugged in as a volunteer<\/strong> if you are willing to make a few phone calls or sign a few papers to make it happen.<\/p><br><figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\"   class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13373\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Hunger-for-Love.jpg?w=900&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Thinking of Others at Christmastime - Distributing clothes to the homeless at Hunger for Love event.\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Hunger-for-Love.jpg?w=702&amp;ssl=1 702w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Hunger-for-Love.jpg?resize=600%2C454&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Hunger-for-Love.jpg?resize=300%2C227&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flandersfamily.info\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Hunger-for-Love.jpg?resize=250%2C189&amp;ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/figure><br><p>Investigate similar opportunities in your own hometown, and <strong>get involved<\/strong>. Jesus made it clear that feeding, clothing, and caring for the needy is what Christians are supposed to be about! (<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/context\/matthew\/25-31.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 25:31-46<\/a>)<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><h2>Love on your extended family<\/h2><br><p>Don&#8217;t forget to make time for the members of your own extended family this time of year. <strong>Invest in those relationships while you have the chance<\/strong>.
