Last weekend, I helped throw a wedding shower for a long-time family friend. Isn’t she a beautiful bride? And she’s just as lovely inside as she is out.<\/p>\n

My husband is always thrilled when I host this sort of event in our home, because it means that the house gets an extra-thorough cleaning and that I attend to lots of minor household repairs that might otherwise go neglected.<\/p>\n

This time was no exception. I used the bridal shower as an excuse to power wash the back porch, refinish the picnic table on our patio, and make a fresh grapevine wreath for the front door.<\/p>\n

The children helped with the general cleaning, including sweeping and mopping the floors. Unfortunately, there were a couple of spots under my kitchen table that just wouldn’t budge, no matter how meticulously they swept (or how hard I scrubbed the floor behind them).<\/p>\n

Upon closer inspection, I realized those spots weren’t ever going to come up, because they had been sealed in when we refinished the floors a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n

The Bible tells us that love is a little like those spots on my brick floor:<\/p>\n

“Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away.” (Song of Solomon 8:7<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Real love is a stubbornly committed love. It holds firm in adversity. No matter what hardships come its way, it’s not going anywhere. It sticks through thick and thin, in want and in wealth, for better or worse, in sickness and in health.<\/p>\n

That’s the kind of love Christ has for us.<\/p>\n

It’s the kind of love married couples are supposed to exercise toward one another — the kind I feel for my husband and he feels for me (and the love we choose to demonstrate for one another, even in those rare instances when we don’t “feel” like it).<\/p>\n

It’s the kind of love I wish for our beautiful young friend and her soon-to-be husband — and the kind of love I wish for you to experience, as well, dear reader.<\/p>\n
