In Psalm 72:6-7<\/a> we read a prayer of Solomon in which he asks God to bless the King and to make the King a blessing to others<\/strong>. He prays:<\/p>\n

“May he come down like rain upon the mown grass, like showers that water the earth. In his days may the righteous flourish, and abundance of peace till the moon is no more.”\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Rain upon mown grass. Isn’t that a lovely picture?<\/p>\n

We’ve gotten a lot of rain this year where I live in East Texas, and the lawns around our neighborhood are lush and green as a result.<\/strong> They are flourishing so well, in fact, that they need to be mown every five or six days to keep them in check.<\/p>\n

\"Freshly<\/a><\/p>\n

Some summers, we don’t get much rain, water has to be rationed, and the lawns turn a crispy brown. The grass doesn’t grow during times of drought, and it doesn’t need mowing, either.<\/strong> It just withers and dies.<\/p>\n

What a blessing and refreshment those summer showers are!<\/strong><\/p>\n

And how appropriate that Solomon would use this analogy.<\/p>\n

It reminds me of a hymn we used to sing<\/a> in church when I was just a young girl:<\/p>\n

“Make me a shower of blessing today,
\nMake me a shower of blessing, I pray,
\nMy life possessing,
\nMy service blessing,
\nMake me a channel of blessing today.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That’s a good prayer for any of us to pray. What might you do today that would help those around you flourish like the green grass? <\/strong><\/p>\n
