On the first Sunday of every August (that’s today!), we celebrate National Friendship Day. So today’s coloring page features Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”

Friends come in all shapes and sizes. They may be coworkers or classmates, military buddies or moms of preschoolers, next door neighbors or nieces and nephews.

Regardless of who they are or how you met them, true friends will help you become the best possible version of yourself. They will build you up and encourage you, to be sure. But they will also stretch and challenge you.

Which is exactly what the Bible is talking about when it says that iron sharpens iron.

I’ve often thought this is one of the advantages to having a big family (besides having built-in friends!). All those siblings serve to sort of knock the rough edges off one another — like rocks in a tumbler. And thanks to this ongoing process, what eventually gets sent out into the world is polished and smooth.

This why we’ve always had the rule that if you can’t get along with your brothers and sisters, you can’t spend time with your friends. As important as outside friendships are to us, family is forever, so we do all we can to encourage siblings to build friendships with one another first.

And here’s that same coloring page in Spanish, for all my friends south of the border! 🙂

In the meantime, take a look at my devotional journals. At over 200 pages a piece, they are packed with writing prompts, coloring pages, word studies, and lots and lots of Bible verses. You can read more about them here.
