Word on Wednesday: Malachi 3:7
We have several volleyball enthusiasts in our family. In fact, they look forward all year to playing in the annual volleyball tournament at Family Camp each October.
Although I’m usually just a spectator at these events, cheering from the sidelines with baby in arms, now that so many of our older/athletic children are grown and gone (and my baby’s no longer a baby, either), I’ve had to join the rest of the family on the court to help field the Flanders’ Team.
This has been great for making memories, but not so great for winning matches, since camp rules dictate a girl must hit the ball during any play requiring more than one touch to get it over the net, and that puts way too much responsibility on my inexperienced shoulders.
Keeping the ball in play requires a little more skill than I currently possess. But if I stay at it, I’m sure to improve.
And that brings me to this week’s memory verse. In Malachi 3:7, we read:
“‘Return to Me, and I will return to you,’ says the LORD of hosts.”
I think the volleyball imagery fits well here. It takes two to make any relationship work. If you don’t feel close to the Lord, guess who dropped the ball?
I’ll give you a hint. It wasn’t Him.
God desires fellowship with us. He stands at the ready to forgive. When we draw near, He does, too. If we return to Him, He promises to return to us, as well.
And when that happens, everybody wins!
