The Flanders Family Update - Summer 2009
Our boys made it home safely from TeenPact National Convention. As for an election update, none of them made it out of the primaries, but they had a wonderful time in Tennessee and are looking forward to trying again next year. Once they returned home, it was onto new challenges....
We love summer vacation! Our entire family uses the time we take off from school to tackle projects that often get neglected in the press of our normal routine. Summer break means craft classes and closet cleaning, early-morning gardening and late-evening swims, family picnics and pleasure reading. But summer days are fleeting, so we try to make the most of our opportunities while they last. Carpe diem!

SUMMER READING - My sister an I recently had an email discussion about our desire to build a life-long love for reading into our children, so I've added that exchange to our mailbag this month. And since it is important for parents to model this love of reading themselves, I've also posted a sampling of the books Doug and I and our older kids have been reading this summer, for anybody who might be interested.
PLAN AHEAD - If, like me, you use the summer months to evaluate and assess last year's school schedule and search for ways to make next year's schedule run more smoothly and efficiently, then this section is for you. In it, you'll find links to my most useful household charts, blank calendars, lesson planners, etc. — all designed to make your life a little easier!
FAMILY VACATIONS - Per one reader's suggestion, I've uploaded copies of the travel itineraries from several of our family's past trips. Read one or two to glean ideas for your own holiday travels or to get a glimpse of how our family keeps things together on the road.
TIRE SWING - As promised, I've uploaded directions for building the wonderful tire swing our son made recently for his boys. The woven mesh in the bottom of the swing allows kids to snuggle safely inside the tire... and there's room enough for two!
God bless and keep you all!
