The Flanders Family Update - Spring 2009
Well, we are making pretty good progress on our New Year's resolutions. Doug insisted on focusing on a single big resolution (Write the Book!) this year instead of a lot of little ones. Nevertheless, we've still managed to tackle and finish several other projects, including adding a dozen new flowerbeds and laying 42 pallets of grass on the land beyond our fence this spring — an ambitious job that involved the entire family.
Several months with no exercise has taken its toll, so now that Doug's foot has healed from a diving board injury, he is back on the workout wagon, getting up bright and early every morning to go to the gym with Bethany, who is home from A&M for summer vacation. Jennifer stays with the little ones and rides her recumbent bicycle. She's been doing a little writing herself and is racing Doug to see which of us can get a manuscript ready to send to the publishers first. We're both hoping to be finished by September and will keep you posted on our progress.
We hope you are enjoying a productive spring, as well! Don't you love the fresh new start this season gives us? If your little ones, like ours, are growing like weeds, let this season be a reminder to stop and smell the roses, as you earnestly seek opportunities to cultivate Christlike character in yourselves and in your children.

Check out what's new by following the links below:
|
TEENPACT - Three of our boys spent a week in Austin last month attending TeenPact State Classes, where David was elected "Governor of Texas". He will be running for President at TeenPact's National Convention in Tennessee the end of May. Samuel and Ben are running for office as well. Click here to check out their campaign ads!
RECIPES - We've expanded and sorted our recipe section to include our family's favorite soups, salads, main courses, and desserts. Many of these meals are super fast and easy. Others can be made ahead and frozen, or thrown together in a crockpot at the start of the day, so they'll be hot and ready as soon as Dad steps through the door in the evening.
KIDS-EAT-FREE - We've updated our list of local restaurants where kids eat free or almost-free. Check out the new "Special Events" section for tips on how your whole family can eat on the cheap, beginning this weekend!
TRAVEL - If you plan to hit the road this summer, take a look at the new charts I've added to my notebook for keeping a record of which states have been visited by what family members. For long car trips, consider giving each child a copy of a blank U.S. map, so they can color in the states your drive through, chart your course across the continent, or keep track of different state license plates they spot along the highways and byways you travel.
GRANDBABIES - The next generation is growing up fast! Here's a recent photo of our grandsons, Aiden and Sawyer, enjoying the tire swing their Daddy built for them in their back yard. Jonathan designed it himself, and we will soon be posting directions for making your own, in case someone at your house would enjoy a fun summer project.
KIDS PICS - Our grandbabies aren't the only ones who are changing daily! We've updated several of the photos in the "About Us" section, so click here to see how big everybody's getting.
God bless and keep you all!
Jennifer
