The Flanders Family Update - Fall 2008

Summer's ended, school's back in session, and our lives are falling back into a comfortable routine. Doug and the boys have started biking to breakfast again on Saturday mornings at sunrise. Joseph (who turned 11 on 9/11) is big enough to accompany them now. We call them "Team Molasses" because they're slow but sweet. At least, the captain is slow. His teammates could easily leave him in the dust, but then who would pay for their pancakes?

The younger kids love biking, as well. Rachel actually won a new bike in a drawing at El Chico's this month and has ridden it round and round our circle drive. It will be a few years before the younger children are ready to hazard the highways with Dad and big brothers. In the meantime, Mom keeps them at home for those cross-country treks to the diner. It works out well. The little ones get to sleep in, and Mom gets some time to work on projects (like this website) in blissful peace and quiet.

Check out what's new by following the links below:

MAILBAG - Jennifer has fielded several new questions for our mailbag this month, including one on sibling rivalry and another on battling fatigue. To read how our family addresses these issues, click here.

CAMPING - Our family recently enjoyed a wonderful week at family camp. The weather this time of year is perfect for pitching tents and roasting marshmallows. We recommend you keep a packing list on file for such family outings, so you can load the necessary gear into your car and head for the hills — maybe not at a moment's notice, but much more efficiently than planning from scratch every time!

MARATHONS - Benjamin and Samuel won first and second place in their age division in Tyler's Second Annual Half Marathon this month. (They were the only runners younger than 18 to race). And David finished the Chicago Marathon in under 5 hours the same weekend. Unfortunately, Doug's back was so sore after riding all night on the train from Texas to Illinois that he could barely stand up, so he didn't run at all. Oh, well. At least it was for a good cause.

BOOKS - We've updated our recommended reading lists to be more informative and easy to use, with the help of a wonderful program provided by Amazon. We've included our favorites on marriage and family, classics on organization, and books to read aloud to your kids. I've also (just barely) started a home school section with curriculum recommendations - watch for that one to be completed by Christmas.

FAVORITES - We've added a new feature to our "Favorites" section: favorite quotes and proverbs! Jennifer has been collecting these for years. Click here to browse through the ones she's uploaded so far.

FAQS - We've also added a section for answers to the most "Frequently Asked Questions" of our family. If you're curious about whether we really meant to have all these kids, or if we even know what causes them, you'll find the answer here.

PURPOSE - Along the same lines, we've added a mission statement to our website. What's our goal in building this site in the first place? Read this to find out.

That's it until next time. We hope you enjoy the crisp, clean air and all the fabulous foliage fall has to offer!

God bless and keep you all!
